Frequently asked questions

What can I do as a volunteer?

Almost anything. Check the latest vacancies on our database  or contact the office  for more information.

 What’s in it for me?

You can volunteer for a couple of hours or several days a week to:

  •  Develop or learn a new skill

  • Work within your community

  • Make new friends

  • Build your confidence

  • Make a difference

  •  Enhance your CV

  • Gain experience for work

  • Start a new  career

  • Have fun!

How much time will I have to give?

We do usually ask for a minimum commitment of 3 months but time commitment varies. Some opportunities will require regular weekly or even daily attendance, but others are less frequent with ad hoc projects such as stewarding at festivals for example.  When considering volunteering it is important to think about your other commitments.

 Do I get paid expenses?

Before you start volunteering discuss with the organisation what expenses will be refunded, you should get your travel expenses refunded.

Will Volunteering affect my welfare benefits?

There should be no restrictions on people receiving welfare benefits while volunteering (though you will need to observe some regulations). For more information visit the Volunteering England website or contact your local benefits office.

Can non-UK citizens volunteer?
Refugees: There are no restrictions on volunteering by refugees
Asylum seekers: Since April 2000, asylum seekers (people in the process of applying for refugee status) and family members are allowed to volunteer. This includes whilst they are appealing against a decision to refuse them asylum.
