New Opportunity for Volunteer Home Tutors

Merton Home Tutoring Service

This is a great opportunity to become a Volunteer Tutor.   You will be teaching adults English on a one to one basis in their own homes.   The lessons are for one hour a week and you will also need to spend an hour on lesson preparation and some travel time.   And of course, you'll need to speak English fluently.

In the first instance an 18 hour training and induction course will be provided.

A better grasp of English will help your learner communicate and engage more fully in society.  It will also give you a chance to get to know more about other people living in Merton.  You will be joining a lively group,  meeting up every month or so to discuss issues. Volunteers find it fun, and very rewarding.

Qualifications and skills:

  • Teaching qualifications are not essential although desirable.
  • CELTA or ESOL qualifications are very helpful.
  • Fluent, accurate standard English is essential.
  • The ability to keep brief accurate records.
  • The ability to learn about the structure of English
  • The ability to learn to plan lessons, carry them out, while being prepared to adapt learning to the situation.
  • An additional language would be advantageous.

Qualities needed:

  • Sensitivity to the needs and feelings of the learner.
  • An interest in other people, other cultures and other ways of doing things.
  • A keenness to encourage independence.

Training and update sessions will take place at the Wimbledon Guild, in Worple Road, Wimbledon.

The start date is 1 October 2012 and a minimum six months commitment is required.   After that it is open-ended.   The teaching will take place at a time convenient to both parties.  The initial training will be organised with regard to the convenience of the group of volunteers.

Initial interviews will either be at The Wimbledon Guild, 30-32 Worple Road, or Vestry Hall, London Road, Mitcham.

Travel expenses equivalent to bus fares will be reimbursed.

You’ll need to be prepared to undergo CRB checks.
