Merton’s New Intergenerational Centre


The Acacia Intergenerational Centre on Grove Road in Mitcham aims to provide a range of shared services and facilities under one roof.  

It will give Merton an opportunity to explore and demonstrate the effectiveness of intergenerational work with families, extended families and all age groups, coming together to learn, play and interact. Currently recruiting for:

Handy Person/Garden Maintenance

Responsibilities:

  • Sweep paths in and around the centre

  • Mow lawns in the centre when required

  • Assist maintaining garden beds

  • Collect any litter around the centre

  • Assemble furniture when required

  • Assist in setting up/packing away tables and chairs.

Time Commitment - 2 hours a week

Skills/Qualifications required:

  • General DIY Skills

  • Good communication skills.

Bicycle Repair and Maintenance Volunteer

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate bicycle repair and maintenance workshops

  • Contribute to safety check of equipment and environment in Adventure Playground.

Time Commitment - 2 hour sessions approx once per fortnight, dependant on demand. 

Skills/Qualifications required:

  • Repair and maintain bicycles

  • Skills in facilitating workshops.

Structure Building- Adventure Playground

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure wellbeing of Adventure playground users

  • Contribute to day to day safety checks of equipment

  • Supervising use of tools.

Time Commitment- Can do 1 or more sessions per week 

Skills/qualifications required:

  • Carpentry skills

  • Good communication skills

  • Understanding of risk assessment.

Silver Surfers Supervisor

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a group of up to 8 young people who offer individual support with IT/technology (e.g mobile phones, computer, internet) to adults in the community.

  • Supervise the group and offer support where necessary

  • Ensure equipment (e.g laptops) are treated with respect and not damaged

  • Report any incidents or concerns to a member of staff

Time Commitment - 2 hours per week 

Skills/qualifications required:

  • Good understanding of IT and the internet

  • Ability to establish and maintain good order amongst a group.

Volunteer Bingo Coordinator

Responsibilities:

  • Plan sessions and organise the group for bingo

  • Assist with setting up the room and cleaning upafterwards

  • Provide a welcoming atmosphere.

Time Commitment - 2 ½ hours per week 

Skills/qualifications required:

  • An understanding of bingo

  • Good organisation and communication skills

  • Ability to manage a group of people of all ages.

Knitting Group Leader

Responsibilities:

  • Encourage people’s interests in knitting and teach skills where appropriate

  • Contribute to planning and evaluation of sessions

  • Maintain a friendly group environment where everyone feels welcome

Time Commitment - 2 hours per week. 

Skills/qualifications required:

  • Ability to knit

  • Ability to manage a group of people of all ages

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Community Cook

Responsibilities:

  • Work with reliant partners to plan well balanced meals

  • Cook lunch time meals that will be sold to the community

  • Lead a team of volunteer community cooks in preparing, serving and clearing up for community lunches

  • Comply with food standards

  • Work as part of a team

  • Work within Health and Safety regulations

Skills/Qualifications required:

  • First Aid certificate is desirable but not essential

  • Cooking skills

  • Good communication skills

  • Understanding the benefits of balanced and nutritional meals.
